Key Takeaways

  • Two Abraxas-linked Hyperliquid wallets are carrying a huge $948M net short position against bitcoin and ether, part of a broader $1.58 billion collection of shorts.
  • The Hyperliquid wallets are down roughly $114.5 million on paper, but both have significant assets supporting the trades.
  • Abraxas is shorting a myriad of crypto assets, though the positions could be hedges rather than a bet on a major market drop.

$1.58 Billion Hyperliquid Short Book Draws Attention

Bitcoin.com News inspected the wallets after the X account Hyperbot flagged them on Monday. The positions are still open, and they both appear to be running pieces of the same enormous short book. At 2:55 p.m. Eastern time on Oct. 6, 2026, both Hyperliquid wallets have net short exposure totaling around $1.58 billion.

This tally includes 189,400 ETH and 5,120 BTC, but these positions can change fast. Onchain statistics collected from hypurrscan.io show that the wallets’ combined bitcoin and ether Hyperliquid positions are worth roughly $948 million in total, and right now, there’s a paper loss of around $114.5 million.

These two addresses have a great deal of assets to hold down any such losses, and they both have logged millions in deposits.

“Spot holdings may offset these shorts, so the positions alone do not establish the wallets’ net market exposure,” the AI X bot Hyperbot wrote about the positions.

Besides the weight of these two wallets in terms of market value, what’s more interesting is the entity behind them. Blockchain explorers like Nansen and Arkham Intelligence label the addresses as belonging to Abraxas Capital Management, a London investment firm that manages billions. Arkham’s label says “Abraxas Capital Mgmt (Heka Funds)” and the entity’s balances have increased significantly in recent times.

What the Whale’s Shorts May Really Mean

The wallets and perpetual futures (perp) trades are readily visible on blockchain explorers, but they reveal little about the entity’s overall strategy, which is considerably more difficult to assess. Still, the books for these two wallets on Hyperliquid are overwhelmingly positioned short and not just with BTC and ETH. The addresses also hold smaller short positions against SOL, HYPE, ENA, XRP, SUI, and PUMP, among other assets.

A concentration of bearish bets like these can signal various methods like hedging and provisioning, instead of insiders knowing exactly where the market will go. Alongside this, visible whale positioning can distort crowd psychology, and you best believe that whales know this. At the end of the day, time and patience will determine how these two wallets fare, and their enormous bets may ultimately prove less prophetic than they appear.
